Mary discusses Mrs. Lanier response to J.B.Lippincott & Co. the publisher. She sent "Guido of St. Augustine with mentions of Hotel Ponce de leon." She wrote the public library of St. Augustines. She also wrote the Earl Barnes of Philadelphia, and Miss Anne Chaires of Chaires, Fla. She seems to be writing to recieve info on the Hotel Ponce de Leon. She refers to Miss Russell and thanks Mrs. Markham.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
